Scene 14
Ebony sat at a booth in Smith’s diner reading her textbook and enjoying a cup of coffee. After checking the time on her watch, she got slightly irritated. It was three-thirty and Latrice had yet to show up.
During their conversation the previous night, Latrice told Ebony that she had something to tell her. Ebony had no idea what it was, but curiosity was killing her. Her mind started to drift as she silently wondered what the big secret was.
She didn’t want to speculate, so she shook it off and resumed her studying. After another five minutes had passed, a strange feeling fell over her. She didn’t know what it was until she looked up and saw a dark skinned young mind staring at her.
He was smiling and licking his lips, LL Cool J style. Ebony rolled her eyes, popped her lips, and went back to her studies. The last thing she wanted to do was give the guy the impression that she was interested. As it turned out, however, a look from her was all it took to increase his courage.
“Shit,” she mumbled to herself, as soon as she saw him get up. There wasn’t a doubt in her mind that he would soon be hovering over her, trying to talk his way into her pants. She thought about trying o make a mad dash to the bathroom, but before she could execute her plan he was at her booth.
“What’s good, ma? Whatcha readin’ on?” He asked.
Ebony looked from side to side. She then looked at him with a mean expression on her face.
“You talking to me?” She asked, as if she thought he was speaking to someone else.
“Of course, ma. I saw you over here all by ya lonesome and figured that you might want some company.”
Ebony stared at him for a few seconds before sticking a bookmark in her book and closing it. To be sure that she had his undivided attention, she looked him directly in the eye. She wanted to be clear about what she was about to say next.
“Well, you figured wrong, boo. Now I’m flattered by your attempt to get to know a sister and all, but I’m already taken. Plus, I’m waiting on a friend of mine.”
Thinking that she had dismissed him in a respectable manner, Ebony opened her book back up. But the young man, who was fast becoming a pest, was determined to not be so easily brushed aside. Ignoring the fact that she wanted to be left alone, the guy slid into the seat across from Ebony.
“I hear you talkin’, ma but I been watchin’ you for a minute now and you done checked yo’ watch about three times, so I can only conduct that whoever you waitin’ on is either real late or they ain’t coming at all.”
At first she was confused by his statement. Then it hit her. He simply mispronounced the word.
“First of all,” she said, biting her lip, “the word is deduct, not conduct. And second of all, don’t you worry about if the person I’m waiting on is late or not.
